ARJAY CENTENO & MELISSA
RUTZ
Arjay & Melissa are extraordinarily talented dancers
from San Francisco, CA. They share a passion for West
Coast Swing. They have quickly risen to become one of
the top ranked couples in the nation. They are current
Showcase Division champions at the 2007 USA Grand
Nationals, Liberty Swing and Mid Atlantic Dance Jam.
They won
the prestigious Phoenix Invitational Champion of
Champions Jack & Jill and have
earned many other competition awards along the way.
They are amazing performers and expert teachers.
Beyond
their West Coast Swing expertise they both have
extensive training in other dance styles and
performance experience. They are currently traveling
to share this expertise with dancers across the
country. On a recent visit to the Boston area their
workshops attracted crowds of 150+. We are fortunate
to have an opportunity to learn from them in the DC
area. |

Melissa
She has been dancing
20 years. This began at the San Francisco Ballet
School where she studied and performed classical
ballet for over 7 years. To expand her dance
education she moved on to study swing with
champion Lindy Hop instructor Sharon Ashe, and
Theater Arts Adagio and at the Metronome Ballroom.
This led to a partnership with her coach, and
World Champion adagio cabaret dancer, Tom Slater.
In 1998 she earned the US
Pro-Am Theatre Arts Adagio Championship. (video)
In addition to a lengthy and diverse
dance resume, Melissa has also trained in New
York City and San Francisco as a singer
(classical, musical theater, jazz, pop, country)
and actress. Melissa graduated
Magna Cum Laude
from Marymount Manhattan College with her B.A. in
Dance!

ARJAY
He discovered his dancing ability in High School
where he performed, taught and and choreographed
hip hop production numbers. Arjay progressed to
International Standard Ballroom and Latin where he
joined his parents in their classes and lessons.
Three months later, he began to compete in
International Standard and Latin divisions with
his Professional/Amateur partner, and teacher and
win First Places at progressively higher levels.
After partnering with Melissa, they discovered
much success in the Amateur divisions.
Arjay currently teaches at the Two Left Feet dance
studio in Danville, CA. Their competition and
teaching schedule takes them all over the country.
Arjay's website |
Melissa and Arjay met at the Metronome in 1999.
Together they trained for International & Latin
Ballroom competition. When they discovered West
Coast Swing it quickly became their favorite. They
compete in the open professional and champion
level divisions. |

AMATEUR JACK & JILL
CONTEST
Competitors must be 15 years old
or older. "Professionals" and dancers who have
previously won at the advanced level or higher in a
Jack & Jill contest may not enter. You must register
and pay the $12 entry fee by 9:30pm Friday night. In
Friday's preliminary contest individuals dance with
several randomly chosen partners to music picked by
our DJ while judges determine who will be called back
in Saturday's finals. Competitors are judged as an
individual based on timing, technique and teamwork.
The list of selected finalists will be posted Friday
night. On Saturday those picked to dance in the final
round will be randomly paired with a partner, then
scored together as a couple. Finalists will dance to 2
short songs while judges determine the winners. The
relative placement scoring method is used to determine
the winners. All finalists will have points recorded
in the World Swing dance council registry at the
intermediate level. Visit the World Swing Dance
Council
website
for more information about Jack & Jill contests and
the points registry.

I
love their fresh outlook on West Coast Swing and of
course, watching them dance is truly amazing! I've
never seen anyone express the idea of a true
partnership the way they do. Other teachers can talk
about sharing 50/50 (or 100/100 as they put it), but I
haven't seen them really dance it like Arjay and
Melissa. Laura Hild – Boston
I
was pretty jazzed to hear that A&M agreed to come, as
I've really grown to love them not just for their
dancing, but because they have to be the most
accessible top pros I have ever met. Last year at
a competition Melissa (who was judging) sought me out
afterward to give me feedback on our routine. I was so
impressed that she would do that! In April when we
came up to NYC, Arjay talked to Don Ho & I at the
"Street Swing" afterparty for nearly an hour about
anything and everything...he is such a well-grounded,
down-to-earth guy. So I think this weekend is going to
ROCK for a lot of reasons. - Dallas Brooks, Washington
DC
Kathy and I just had Arjay and Mellisa up in Boston
for Champions Summer Weekend. They are amazing dancers
and just fun to hang and talk with. Arjay played late
night for an hour and it was nuts. Great music!
Everyone loved their classes. – Joe Mahoney – Boston
These two are amazing!! I was at a workshop weekend in
Boston and it ROCKED!! A&M - are amazing professionals
and for those of you who haven't taken a workshop with
them then it is totally worth it. They will also be
joining us for Swingin' New England this year.
Needless to say the East Coast are big fans of Melissa
and Arjay.
