Alternate Sundays
The Desert Swing Dance Club holds a dance on the 2nd & 4th Sunday of each month at Billy Reed's Restaurant.
Sunday Lessons (1-3 PM) are $5 for the full 2 hours or any portion thereof
Cost of Dance: DSDC members & members of sister clubs $5, other guests $8. (2) Reviews:
One weekend last month we went on a small outing. We started by attending a WCS dance in Long Beach which is held on the 4th Saturday of each month. It is hosted by Rhonda Diamond with some great music by David Koppleman. The $10 admission is discounted to $8 if you bring the coupon which is in her e-mail announcement. You can get on her list by dropping her a note at DIAMOND2DANCE@AOL.COM The price of admission also includes a high end dance lesson. Last month it was taught by Trish Connery, a well known Southland dance teacher. The other students in the class were mostly faces that I recognized as being competitors at the dance conventions. The class is what drew us there but the dance was also exciting and we plan to return this month and as often as possible. Oh did I mention that besides the lesson and the dance you also get light refreshments for your $8. I received an e-mail since my return home telling me that the dance has found a new larger venue; REGENCY BALLROOM , SOUTH BAY DANCE CENTER, 24817 S. Western Ave., Lomita, CA 90717 After the dance we spent the night nearby and spent the following day at the shops and beach in Seal Beach. After an early dinner we proceded to our final destination; the Orange County West Coast Swing Dance Club’s dance at Top Cat’s in Placentia. This again is another dance where you feel like you are in the middle of a dance video. The music by Jumpin’ Jack Smith is as good as it gets. The dance floor is great and the dancers are the best in So Cal. Beginning immediately there will be top quality WCS dance lessons included with your admission to Top Cats. Admission is only $10 and your local swing dance club membership card will get you $1 off. Some snacks are included with your admission. Upcoming dance teachers include Patti Jobst & David Graybill, Trish Connery, Tom & Sossy Hyat & more. You can check out the lineup for youself at http://www.ocwcsdc.com

Yours for the Taking
I have a pair of black men’s dance shoes with 1 ½” Latin heals that are free to a good home. I paid about $140 for them 5 years ago but I haven’t worn them very much because they are a little tight and hurt my feet after an hour of dancing. They are European size 45 ½ which I assume is about a 10 ½ or 11 street shoe size. The 1st guy who contacts me and can meet me at a dance I am attending is welcome to them for free…Brian

Barb DeLay **************************************************************************************************************************************** RE: Cool Joe Cool Hi Lorna, Connie, Brian & Sam,
His sister did e-mail me back today. She was very brief. He was in a motor cycle accident (March 8th). It must have been very serious as she indicated he hung on until April 10th. I have no idea it that means he was in a comma or not. Anyway, that was all the detail she gave. I won't press her for more. Joe was a very actiive person and riding his biike was something I know he enjoyed doing. He was really careful, I can't imagine what happened.
I hope you are all well. I am so busy with my quilting hobby (and full time working) that I haven't danced for over a year. I am pretty sure I forgot most of what I learned!!! I am still a paid up member in the club. I will be back, sooner or later. I am grateful I am still on the e-mail list.
Take care, all of you. Bonnie
Sounds like he was a
very "cool" guy. Wish I had met him. My condolences to those in the
swing club that did know Joe.
Brian:
Joe Cool -- what a guy. Always front and center to help out. He was a regular set-up volunteer for our annual Tri-City Ball even though he couldn't attend due to his work schedule. He was always the first one there, and wouldn't leave till he was satisfied that the job was done properly. He was a well known and respected member of the DSDC and his loss will be felt by all those who had the privilege of knowing him. Bert Anderson
Oh
Brian,
I am always so stunned when I learn of the passing of one of the dance
club members, and lately it just seems so hard to learn of another dear
"leader" making his transition. I was always delighted to dance with
him, as he was kind and gentle, and never made me feel badly if I messed
up a step. Dee
DEAR FRIENDS; YES, THIS IS A SAD LOSS FOR ME...JOE WAS IN GARY DUBBS CLASSES AND WAS A FUN PARTNER... I DONT HAVE THE E-MAIL OUTLET THAT YOU DO...SO I AM PASSING THIS ON TO YOU.. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME AND ASSISTANCE. SINCERELY,' DR. SAM
******************************************************************************************************************************************** Dance Lessons. I receive a lot of requests for information on dance lessons. I have compiled a list that I will e-mail for FREE to anyone requesting it. The list will be composed of qualified teachers giving either private or group lessons in the Coachella Valley. If you prefer to have a printed copy send $1 and a stamped, self-addressed business sized envelope. Places to Dance in the Palm Springs Area: is a list of dance places that takes 2 double-sided pages. It is arranged by day of the week and starting time of the dance. It lists the address, phone #, type of music, cover charge if there is one and a rating of whether or not you need to bring your own partner. There are many places to dance every day!!! You can have one of these lists for FREE via e-mail or for a donation of $1 to the Desert Swing Dance Club and a self-addressed, stamped, business sized envelope…Brian This list is now on my computer with a program that allows me to update it immediately as information changes. The list is printed when you request it so it is completely up to date. Brian Paczesniak 97 Desert Rose Dr. Palm Springs, CA 92264-6438 (4) Dance Tip for this Month While I am not a professional dance teacher and I don’t even make claim to be an exceptional dancer I am an avid student and I read or listen to some very knowledgeable teachers. I can’t necessarily put it all into practice (yet), but just knowing these tidbits will help me in the long run. I will be submitting something for your consideration each month and I hope someone out there will find it helpful as well. If you are a very experienced dancer you may not need these tips and might even wish to contribute a tip of your own to be published. They will mostly be about West Coast Swing but many will be relevant to other dances as well…Brian
To Follow or Not to Follow in a Group Class
I have always subscribed to the theory that in a group class the leader should do his/her best to execute the step the way the teacher is teaching it; even if it seems to be not as good as the way one already does that or a similar step. By the same logic the follower should follow what the leader is leading even if it’s not exactly what the teacher is teaching; even if it isn’t even close; after all the main objective of a follower is to “follow”. When she gets out on the social dance floor the leaders will either intentionally or unintentionally morphed the step into something that fits their own style of dancing and it may only resemble what the teacher has shown. A follower of this theory should therefore not do anything that the leader isn’t leading. Ergo if he leads nothing the follower does nothing and if he asks you reply that you didn’t feel the lead. Otherwise he thinks he is leading and he isn’t really learning anything. When he gets out on the social dance floor he will wonder why nobody can follow his great new move.
Recently I got into a discussion on this subject with a good friend. She said that she was tired of paying for classes where she didn’t learn the pattern because none (or very few) of the leaders were actually doing anything that resembled leading. She said that out of frustration she has adopted the behavior of doing the step whether or not it is led. I gasped. However, after discussing the issue at length I did understand her frustration. Hopefully there will be at least some leaders capable of leading the step after a couple of go-rounds. If the follower does the step without being led she will be facilitating guys who won’t be able to lead it socially. Will she be available to back lead it for them on the dance floor? There isn’t really a lot of value in learning the followers’ part if there are no leaders to lead it.
I guess I would have to propose a compromise. If there are a fair amount of leaders leading it correctly, enjoy their partnership and just try to follow those who haven’t got it yet but please don’t offer them advice unless they ask you a specific question and even then be thoughtful and cautious. If you feel that there are very few leading the step correctly try alternating; do what they are leading (or not leading) part of the time and do what the teacher is teaching for a lesser amount of the time. Keep in mind that you are also a student and may not have a grip on your part either.
In conclusion there is no clear cut answer to this problem unless you have your own leader who is good enough to meet your expectations. Otherwise just use your best discretion; keeping in mind all aspects of the situation. I have been equally annoyed by expert dancers who forcefully backlead me correctly and by followers who attempted to backlead the step incorrectly. A lot depends on attitude. Be humble and you will probably be a popular follower and progress in your quest for nirvana…Brian **********************************************************************************

As the number of times we encounter panhandlers in the parking lot at Billy Reed's increases I thought it might be a good idea for all of us to have Billy Reed's phone number in our cell phones. Sherry told us to let the manager know if they are out there. Last night was the first time I encountered one upon my arrival. If I had the number in my phone I could have called then. I have it in now (760) 325-1946. Obviously I didn't get out of my car when he tried to approach me. The real problem is that none of these guys have signs on them stating "I am a panhandler" or "I am a serial killer." I'm not trying to make everyone paranoid . . . just to be aware and prepared.
Thanks, Cindy *****************************************************************************************************************

That song is not used in the video for copyright reasons but a CD with suitable replacement music is included. Hold On!!! Before you start saying I don’t do line dancing, I don’t even own cowboy boots; all of the steps taught in the video can be incorporated in your normal WCS without need for a 10-gallon hat or shit-kickin’ boots. …Brian This Video is available for check out now…anyone who has dance videos that they have outgrown might think about donating them to our library in order to help other dancers. Looking for a good deal on Dance Shoes??? Very Fine Dancesport Shoes offers a selection of over 300 different styles and colors and 150,000 pairs in stock at their El Monte, Ca. warehouse and showroom. You can find flyers with 2 for 1 coupons in the literature rack at Billy Reed’s Restaurant or you can mail a stamped, self addressed envelope to Brian and he will send as many as you request. I have a couple pairs of their house brand dance sneakers and I like them every bit as much as the name brand ones I’ve purchased for much more money. Their sneakers range from $69 to $89 before the coupon savings so they end up being $35 to $45 when you check out. You don’t have to buy the same type of shoe for the 2 for 1 offer. You pay for the most expensive ones and the other pair is free. You can even go with a friend and each buy one pair and split the savings. The dance sneakers were less money than any I found online and then you get another pair free. With their huge stock you are assured of getting the right size that day and not have to pay for shipping them back. Size is important since dance shoes never seem to be the same size as street shoes and there’s nothing quite as uncomfortable as shoes that don’t fit…Brian Brian Paczesniak 97 Desert Rose Dr. Palm Springs, CA 92264

(10) Policy Statement
While I do my best to be fair to all concerned, there will always be someone who feels that they have been slighted. This e-newsletter is a volunteer effort on my part. I don’t make a dime from it and I spend a great deal of time and energy publishing it. I do my best to evaluate the importance of the material that I present and place it when and where I feel it is appropriate. While it may inadvertently supply some free advertising for some events/teachers, they should not rely on it for such. Those who need to advertise their events are well advised to take out an ad in a local newspaper where they will get what they pay for. The purpose of this e-newsletter is to provide information to the dancers who read it…Brian
If you are receiving this E-Newsletter more than once per edition, and would like to correct that situation, or if you do not wish to be receiving it at all, let me know…Brian
